On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at approximately 4:18 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 9200 block of 17th Avenue Northeast for reports of a fire in the basement. Firefighters arrived to a single family residence with flames from a daylight basement extending to the roof. The residents had already evacuated.
First arriving units laid hose lines to the daylight basement and to the main floor, quickly extinguishing the fire where it had initiated. Firefighters were also able to successfully extinguish the extended flames in the roof. Seattle City Light was also on scene to shut off the power to the structure and provide assistance. Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters rechecked for any hot spots and verified that all flames were extinguished completely. Seattle Department of Transportation assisted in providing sand following firefighting efforts given the freezing temperature.
There were no reported injuries in this incident. However, two cats died in the fire.
The cause and damage has yet to be determined.
