SEATTLE – On August 5, 2017 at 2:20 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 11200 Blk. of Meridian Ave. N. for a fire in a three-story apartment complex. When crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the building, and requested additional fire units to the scene. The fire was quickly upgraded to a three-alarm fire.
Firefighters applied water and foam on the fire, and conducted vertical ventilation from the roof. At the height of the fire, there were 13 engine companies, and 9 ladder trucks on scene. One adult male firefighter with minor injuries was transported to Haborview Medical Center via a SFD aid unit. The apartment building was safely evacuated and there were no other reported injuries.
Thirty apartment units were impacted by the fire. The American Red Cross is on scene to assist approximately 60-70 displaced residents.
UPDATE: Fire investigators ruled the fire as accidental, and determined the cause was from faulty electrical equipment. The fire started in a kitchen on the second floor of the north side of the building. Estimated loss is $4 million to structure, and $2 million to contents.
