February 26—Seattle Fire Investigators determined a fire at an under construction house in Judkins Park was intentionally set.

The initial 911 call came in at 12:28 a.m. reporting flames coming from a single family home located at the corner of South Norman Street and 24th Avenue South. While responding to the scene, fire officers could see the flames shooting into the night sky from several blocks away.

Engine 6 arrived first to find a full involved 3-story home that was under construction. Flames from the home were exposing to a second under construction house. Using multiple hose lines, firefighters were able to control the flames in 7 minutes. Embers from the fire landed on a nearby houses roof causing a temporary evacuation of the residents. The residents were eventually allowed back in.

The fire also damaged a piece of construction equipment, a port-a-potty and burned through a power line to a home. There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters conducted an overnight fire watch to make sure the embers don’t reignite in the home.
Fire investigators estimate the damage at $30,000 to the structure and contents. The case has been turned over to the Seattle Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad who will be investigating.

February 17—A fire at a home in a Rainier Valley was caused by improperly disposed of staining rags that spontaneously combusted according to a Seattle Fire Investigator.

At 6:49 p.m., a neighbor called 911 to report an alarm bell going off and smoke and fire inside a two-story home locate in the 3800 block of South Mead Street. Engine 28 arrived to find flames shooting from the front door and fire visible on the first floor of the house. Firefighters made entry and knocked down the fire on both the first and second floor of the house. It took about 37 minutes to completely extinguish the flames.

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire but did arrive on the fire scene minutes after firefighters arrived. Fire crews found two deceased dogs on the second floor of the house.

The American Red Cross was called out to assist one adult male and one adult female with temporary shelter.

The first floor of the home was being remodeled at the time of the fire. The staining rags were left in a front entryway.

The Fire investigator determined the fire was an accidental fire caused by the spontaneous combustion of the stain rags which caught nearby combustibles on fire.

The damage estimate is $35,000 to the house and $10,000 to the contents.

There were no injuries.

February 16— Seattle Fire Investigator determined a fire inside a Georgetown industrial building was an accidental fire caused by overheated electrical wiring in a forklift.

At 2:13 a.m., a 911 call came into the Fire Alarm Center from a security guard who saw smoke coming from the 2-story industrial equipment repair business. Georgetown’s Engine Company 27 arrived first and found heavy smoke coming from the roof of the warehouse. Crews made forcible entry and found heavy smoke inside the building. Firefighters located the flames coming from a forklift parked on the first floor of the building. It took about 20 minutes to completely extinguish the flames.

The fire investigator determined the fire started with overheated electrical wiring in a forklift which caused an engine compartment fire which ruptured a pressurized propane fuel line. The estimated loss is $15,000.

There were no reported injuries.
