May 12—A Seattle Fire Investigator determined a West Seattle vacant house fire was an accidental fire caused by the spontaneous combustion of improperly disposed of stain or paint rags.

The first 911 call came into the Fire Alarm Center at 8:05 p.m. reporting smoke from a vacant house located in the 6300 block of 36th Avenue SW. Engine Company 37 arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the basement of the backside of the home.

Initially the firefighters took a defensive position and fought the fire from the outside of the home. Once firefighters removed the plywood from the windows of the boarded up home, they launched an interior attack on the fire.

It took about 15 minutes for fire crews to control the flames and approximately an hour before the flames were completely extinguished.

There were no injuries.

The investigator determined the fire started in the basement and spread to combustible materials stored in the lower level of the house. The damage estimate is $25,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents.

May 9—Seattle Firefighters determined a post office building is safe to reoccupy after a pickup truck drove into it.

At 1:48 p.m., dispatchers at the Fire Alarm Center received a 911 call reporting a vehicle into the West Seattle Post Office located in the 2700 block of SW Trenton Street. When firefighters arrived they found the driver of the pickup truck uninjured but still inside the truck’s cab.

Concerned about the structural integrity of the building, firefighters evacuated three dozen patrons and employees of the facility. The pickup truck damaged a concrete/brick column and two large windows as it made entry into the lobby.

One female postal customer was knocked to the floor when a metal shelf fell into her. Medics evaluated and treated her for minor scrapes and bruises.

The Technical Rescue Team used shoring equipment and high powered air bags to lift the concrete column off of the pickup truck. The truck was towed from the property.

The Seattle Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident.

April 29—Seattle Fire Investigators determined an early morning apartment fire in West Seattle was caused by an electrical malfunction in the kitchen range which ignited combustible materials in the kitchen. Investigators say the kitchen fire extended to the living room of the bottom level unit. The fire is being ruled accidental.

At 2:10 a.m. a 911 call came into a dispatcher at the Fire Alarm Center reporting a fire at the four-story complex located in the 9000 block of 35th Avenue SW. Ladder Company 11 arrived to find heavy smoke inside the complex and flames coming from a bottom level unit. It took 12 minutes to knock down the flames and an hour to completely extinguish the fire inside the first floor unit. Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the one unit.

32 people were displaced when smoke filled the hallways of the complex. A Seattle Public Library staff member opened up a classroom at the Southwest Branch, located across the street from the apartment complex, to temporarily shelter the evacuated residents. A King County Metro Bus was brought in to keep the residents warm.

The apartment resident says a smoke detector alerted her to the fire which allowed her to safely escape. The Red Cross was called to assist the one resident with temporary shelter.

The damage estimate is $47,000.

January 22, 2013—An unattended portable halogen work light inside a dog cage is to blame for a West Seattle house fire according to a Seattle Fire Investigator.

The candle was located in a bedroom and the investigator determined it most likely ignited available combustible materials.

At 5:05 a.m. on Sunday November 18, 2012, a neighbor called the Fire Alarm Center and reported seeing flames coming from a house located in the 9400 block of 7th Avenue SW. The fire was located in the bedroom of the single family home. The flames burned through the sub-floor and into the crawlspace below.

No one was injured. The fire investigator estimates the damage at $70,000.

In 2010, candle fires caused 90 deaths, 820 injuries and $370 million in property damage according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). December is the peak time of the year for home candle fires.

The Seattle Fire Department’s Public Education Unit offers these basic rules to follow:

•	Always keep burning candles within sight.

•	Extinguish all candles when leaving the room of before going to sleep.

•	Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

•	Place lighted candles where they won’t be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.

•	Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets books, flammable decorations etc.
•	Read and carefully follow all manufacturer instructions. Do not burn a candle longer than the manufacturer recommends.

•	Extinguish pillar and taper candles when they burn to within two inches of the holder.

•	Discontinue burning the votive and container candles before the last half-inch of wax melts.

October 23—A Seattle Fire Investigator determined a fire that caused $65,000 in damage at a West Seattle home last night was accidental. The occupant of the home was working on plumbing when the heat from the plumbing work ignited the wall and extended into the attic space.

At 10:10 p.m., a call came in the Fire Alarm Center reporting flames coming from the wall of a home in the 9000 block of 21st Avenue SW. Engine Company 11 arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of the two-story home. The firefighters used an attack hose line to knock down the flames while the first in Ladder Company searched the residence for occupants and then headed to the roof to cut holes in order to vent the smoke and heat.

Firefighters discovered the fire inside the walls of the home. The flames extended up the walls into the attic. Crews removed two walls and brought down ceilings in order to completely extinguish the flames. It took approximately 30 minutes to completely knock down this fire.

There occupants safely evacuated the home and there were no reported injuries.

The damage estimate is $65,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents.
