September 15— Seattle Firefighters responded to a home in Lower Queen Anne which caught fire early this morning. Multiple 9-11 callers reported heavy black smoke and flames coming from the hillside near 4th Avenue West and West Republican Street.
Engine Company 2 arrived to find flames shooting from the windows and roof of a one story home. Due to the heavy amount of flames, firefighters were forced to fight the fire from the outside of the house. Fire crews poured water on the north side of the wood structure to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby brush and homes. The flames also ignited overhanging tree branches. A 60-foot cliff prevented firefighters from reaching the back of the home.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze. No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
A Seattle Fire Investigator determined it was an accidental fire caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on the back deck. The investigator determined the dollar loss as $100 thousand dollars to the structure and $50 thousand dollars to the contents.
