January 1—Seattle Fire Investigators determined an apartment fire on Capitol Hill was started by accident.
911 dispatchers received a call at 12:42 a.m. reporting flames coming from the apartment located in the 500 block of East Denny.Engine 25 arrived to find smoke in the area intermittent flames coming from the window of the 4th floor unit. Firefighters knocked the flames down in less than 7 minutes. No one was inside the apartment when firefighters searched the apartment.
According to fire investigators, a couch located next to an electric baseboard heater caught fire. The flames spread through the apartment causing $35,000 in structure damage and $10,000 in property damage.
No one was injured. A pet cat did not survive the fire.
