January 30—A transient is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center after suffering 2nd and 3rd degree burns from a house fire this morning. The man in his mid-30’s was found next door to a home burning in the 3600 block of South Graham Street.
A caller reported the house fire at 4:36 a.m. Engine Company 28 found light smoke coming from the daylight basement of the one story abandoned home. Firefighters had to navigate around blackberry bushes to enter the basement from the back of the house.
Once making access to the basement, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in 2 minutes.
After the fire was put out, Medics discovered a man coming out of a next door abandoned home who had burns to 50% of his body. Medic rushed the patient to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
A Seattle Fire Investigator determined the cause of the fire as accidental. A transient was sleeping on a mattress in the basement of the home and either smoking material or an adjacent burning candle set fire to the mattress.
The house is slated for demolition and there is no estimated dollar loss.
