June 11—An early morning fire inside a South Park garage was caused by a transient cooking fire according to Seattle Fire Investigators.
At 2:45 a.m., a 911 caller reported a fire inside a detached single car garage in the 700 block of South Sullivan Street. South Park Engine Company 26 arrived in less than 4 minutes to find a fully involved garage fire extending to a vacant house.
West Seattle’s Ladder Company 13 made forcible entry into the locked home and searched the house and the garage for any people that may be inside the structure. Firefighters did not find anybody in either building.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes and limited the extension of flames to the vacant home.
The fire is ruled accidental by fire investigators who determined transients living in the vacant garage were cooking and ignited nearby combustibles. The garage was destroyed and the damage estimate is $30,000.
There were no reported injuries.
