Seattle Fire investigators determined that the truck fire on April 15, 2016, was accidental. Investigators say the fire and subsequent explosion were caused by a leak in a propane tank located in the bed of the truck.
At 4:56 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported a truck fire and explosion in front of several businesses on Fourth Avenue South, north of Michigan Street. Engine 27 extinguished the fire. There were no injuries, however, due to the extent of the damage caused by the explosion, fire investigators were dispatched to the scene. Investigators estimate the total damage to the vehicle and neighboring buildings is 85,000 dollars.
As a reminder, when transporting propane or a similar combustible, tanks should be checked for leaks and properly secured in the vehicle. All valves should be tightly closed prior to moving or transporting the tank.
