November 1- Seattle Fire Investigators determined a fire inside a Rainier Valley detached garage was caused by the occupant falling asleep while smoking. The fire is being classified as accidental.
Beginning at 10:58 a.m., multiple 911 calls came into dispatchers at the Fire Alarm Center reporting flames coming from a garage located in the 3500 block of South Adams Street. Engine Company 30 arrived to find flames coming from the detached building and exposing to the house on the property. The flame also extended into the basement of the house. The fire was also threatening a fence and a home located to the north of the garage. Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
Firefighters transported the male occupant of the garage to Harborview Medical Center for a medical condition unrelated to the fire.
Seattle Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad Detectives were called to the scene to assist with the initial investigation.
The damage estimate is $10,000 to the structure and $2,000 to the contents.
