May 27— Seattle Fire Investigators determined a fire that raced through a South Seattle Buddhist temple was accidental caused by food on the stove. The home is a total loss and investigators estimate the fire caused $300,000 in damage to the structure and $300,000 in damage to the contents.

The first 911 call came in at 8:19 a.m. reporting heavy black smoke coming from a one-story home which also serves as a temple. The first firefighters on scene say flames and smoke were coming from the back and the roof of the house.

The home, located on the 3900 block of South Sunny View Drive, is located below a steep grade and had a large fence around the property. This made accessing the property more difficult for the firefighters who had to take down a portion of a fence and lower a ladder down a hillside to get access to the kitchen of the home where the fire originated. In addition, firefighters also laid 600 feet of hose line to reach to flames.

The homeowner told fire investigators he was cooking when the flames spread through the kitchen. The man in his 50’s escaped the flames but suffered a minor burn to his head and was treated by paramedics on scene.

Firefighters reported a large amount of combustible materials inside the home which made it more difficult to extinguish the fire. The flames also raced through the attic space of the home.

It took fire crews 30 minutes to completely extinguish the fire. In order to avoid any hot spots from flaring up, a rotation of fire engine companies will remain on fire watch at the scene until Monday morning.

No firefighters were injured.
