Seattle — At 1:09 a.m., the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received 911 calls reporting a fire involving a tree and a two-story residence in the 3800 block of Sunnyside Ave. N. in the Wallingford neighborhood. Engine 9 was the first unit on scene and reported an active fire at the front of the home, with electrical wires down on the north side. They worked quickly to put water on the fire, knocking down a significant portion of the exterior fire and preventing flames from extending to neighboring homes.
Crews from Ladder 9 made entry through a back door and found an adult female on the ground within a few feet of the doorway. They rescued the occupant from the burning home and transitioned patient care to other firefighters. The patient was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
Firefighters entered the home to put water on the fire and conduct a primary search but encountered heavy smoke and a lot of furniture and debris throughout the home. At 1:39 a.m., flames breached through the roof, indicating the structure was at risk of collapse.
The incident was upgraded to a 2-alarm response as firefighters evacuated the building and transitioned to a defensive strategy by putting water on the fire at a safe distance away from the building while protecting the neighboring homes. Almost a hundred firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
At 1:54 a.m., crews reported the chimney collapsed along with portions of the roof. However, crews continued to work hard and had the fire under control by 2:04 a.m. Half an hour later, the incident was downgraded to a few units as crews continue to extinguish hot spots. No additional injuries were reported, and the incident is under investigation.
