Photo by John Odegard Seattle — At 1:20 a.m., the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received 911 calls reporting a fire involving a detached shed in the backyard of a residence in the 900 block of 20th Avenue in the Central District. The first units on scene reported smoke and flames coming from the shed, then extending to adjacent homes.
Firefighters worked quickly to put water on the fire and evacuate the impacted homes. Incident command upgraded the response to a 2-alarm fire to request additional resources. Twelve fire engines, six ladder trucks, Rescue 1 and additional support units responded to the scene, totaling 100 Seattle Fire personnel.
Crews had the fires under control by 3 a.m. They transitioned to work on overhaul to remove burnt debris and extinguish hot spots. The fires damaged seven buildings, including two sheds, four single-family homes and an apartment building. The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections was requested to evaluate the structural damage of the buildings. One Seattle Fire unit will remain on scene through the morning for fire watch.
No residents reported injuries. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was able to go home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
