Fatal fire in the Mount Baker neighborhood

Seattle — This morning at 8:52 a.m., the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received 911 calls reporting smoke and flames coming from a vacant commercial building at the 3500 block of Rainier Ave. S. The first units on scene confirmed an active fire with smoke and flames coming out the windows of the building.

At 9:07 a.m. the incident was upgraded to a 2-alarm fire to request additional resources. Crews worked quickly to pour water on the fire to prevent it from spreading to adjacent homes and businesses. The majority of the fire was knocked down eleven minutes later, allowing firefighters to enter the building to extinguish hot spots and search for survivors. Unfortunately, one person was found deceased inside the building.

The fire was extinguished by 9:51 a.m. and no further injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation.
