Seattle — At 4:22 p.m., the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received 911 calls reporting an approx. 40-foot boat on fire that was moored at a marina in the 2100 block of Westlake Ave. N. of Lake Union. The first units on scene reported the boat was fully involved in the fire with flames extending to the roof of the enclosed dock. Land-based crews worked quickly to put water on the boat fire while Harbor Patrol and Fireboat crews worked together to put water on the flames that extended to the roof of the dock.
Firefighters successfully protected adjacent boats from catching fire and searched them to confirm the entire marina was evacuated. No injuries were reported. The original vessel involved in the fire sustained significant damage and sunk. The rest of the fire was extinguished by 5:09 p.m. Crews on the fireboat and rescue boat deployed floatation booms around the sunken vessel to prevent fuel and debris from spreading further into Lake Union.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the scene was turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard for salvage operations.
Updated June 26: Investigators ruled the cause of the fire as undetermined.
